The Do’s and Don’ts of a Bathroom Renovation

Apollo 2 Sided sliding door - Fleurco

Undertaking any home renovation project is an exciting experience as there are so many wonderful design and style options to choose from. Before knocking down tiles and exposing pipes, here are our top 5 do’s and don’ts to consider for your next bathroom renovation.

DO invest in quality materials. Renovation projects are a financial commitment, so be sure to choose materials that will last. To ensure the longevity of your new bathroom, invest in higher quality tiles, fixtures and accessories. Fleurco uses the highest quality materials in developing outstanding bathroom products.

DO think about the future. Another way to increase the lifespan of your bathroom is to consider your needs as you age. Learn more about aging in place here.

DO include ventilation. The bathroom is the steamiest room in the house, especially after a long, hot shower. Ensure that fans are installed to whisk moisture away to keep mold at bay and paint in place.

DO consider the types of cleaning materials required. From tiles to fixtures and natural stone to travertine, elements of your bathroom may require different cleaning methods. Simplify future bathroom care by selecting materials that can be cleaned with the same products. Fleurco treats the majority of their shower doors with Microtek glass protection which makes cleaning simple.

DO take the time to waterproof. Use tile-backing waterproof drywall (green board) where possible, seal the floor and shower surround and apply sufficient waterproof caulk around tubs, shower bases and shower fixtures. Tile grout should be sealed as well.

DON’T make any major changes to plumbing unless absolutely required. Moving showers, tubs, toilets and sinks usually means changing the plumbing, which will add to costs and likely extend the project timeline.

DON’T forget about storage. Opt for vanities and cabinets that have enough space to house your toiletries and cosmetics. The more opportunities for storage, the less clutter in the future.

DON’T mix and match too many trends. You want to love your bathroom remodel for a long time so pair timeless, classic pieces with one or two trends. This will allow you to make small updates in the future without the need for a complete remodel.

DON’T use paint and primer in-one on your walls. Since your bathroom is a high-moisture room, use two separate coats of paint; a new drywall primer and moisture resistant paint. This will help prevent your paint from peeling off the walls.

DON’T take on too much. Hire skilled professionals to get the job done properly and to code. Investing in certified tradespeople will save you time and money in the future.
