How to Choose the Perfect Shower Door for Your Bathroom

How to Choose the Perfect Shower Door for Your Bathroom

A shower door plays a major role in establishing your bathroom's style, comfort and usability. With so many configurations, glass options and finishes available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. By understanding your space, taking accurate measurements and considering your design preferences, you can confidently select a shower door that complements your aesthetic and lifestyle.

Fleurco’s products are designed and manufactured using the highest quality materials. Whether you're renovating an existing bathroom or planning a new build, this guide will walk you through the key factors to consider when selecting the perfect shower door.

1. Consider Installation

Gemini plus

For alcove showers situated between three walls, in-line doors – such as the Gemini Plus shown here – are the perfect choice.

The first step in choosing a shower door is identifying the layout of your shower. The number of surrounding walls – whether it's an alcove, two-sided, corner, tub door or single pivot door installation – along with the width of your opening, will determine which door types are available for your space.

  • In-line shower doors: can only be installed between three walls
  • Two-sided shower doors: can be installed with only two walls and consists of front panels and a side return panel
  • Tub doors: can only be installed between three walls with an opening wide enough
  • Single pivot doors: needs three walls but a specific, smaller opening width
  • Corner doors: need two walls and are typically reserved for smaller spaces

2. Measure Your Space

Before selecting a shower door, measure your space to ensure the right fit.

Taking accurate measurements is essential to selecting the right shower door for your bathroom. Do not take measurements until the shower base or finished flooring as well as all wall tile or stone have been fully installed. Measuring before these finishing materials are in place can result in inaccurate dimensions and an improper fit.

For new construction or renovations, ensure the enclosing walls are as straight as possible. Then measure the height of the enclosure from the top of the base threshold and record it for reference. The finished tiled walls must be taller than the desired shower door.

Next, measure the width of the enclosure at three locations: the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest of these three measurements as your final width to help ensure the shower door fits properly within the finished enclosure.

3. Choose Your Door Type

The Apollo square shower door features corner entry sliding doors that enclose the space between two walls.

Your shower enclosure dimensions are only part of the equation. It's equally important to consider the surrounding bathroom space and how the door will function. Identify how much clearance you have for a door to swing open or if you need a sliding option. Options include:

  • Bypass: an enclosure with two overlapping glass panels that glide past each other on a track
  • Sliding: one fixed panel and one moving panel that glides along an upper track
  • Pivot: type of swinging door that requires outer clearance to open
  • Walk-in: a fixed panel that encloses an open concept, doorless shower
  • Corner: an enclosure specifically designed to fit into the intersection of two bathroom walls
