How to Plan Your Bathroom Renovation in 4 Steps

How to Plan Your Bathroom Renovation in 4 Steps

Whether you're dreaming of a spacious shower, a spa-worthy bathtub, or simply a more modern style, here’s how to organize your renovation in four simple and effective steps. Follow the guide below!

1. Planning is key!

Before grabbing a sledgehammer and starting the demolition, take the time to think it through. What’s not working with your current bathroom? Not enough storage? A bathtub that takes up too much space? A style stuck in the 90s?

  • Clearly define your needs
  • Set a realistic budget

2. Choose your style and ideal layout

Your bathroom is like your personal sanctuary, so make it a space where you feel at ease! Whether modern, Scandinavian or rustic, pick a vibe that reflects you.

Be practical when it comes to the layout:

  • Do you have enough space for both a shower AND a bathtub, or should you pick one?
  • Where will you place other fixtures for easy movement?
  • Is there enough light to conduct daily tasks such as shaving or makeup application?
  • And most importantly, is there enough storage? Well-designed shelves & drawers can make all the difference!

3. Select the right materials (durable and stylish)

Bathroom materials should look great, of course, but most importantly, they need to be water-resistant and easy to maintain. Nobody wants to scrub grout every Sunday morning...

Here are a few options to consider:

  • Flooring: Ceramic, high-end vinyl or polished concrete, depending on your style and budget.
  • Walls: Large tiles for a modern touch, or wall panels for a quick and easy installation.
  • Countertops: Quartz or laminate for easy upkeep.
  • Faucets: Matte black for a trendy look, gold for a chic touch, or classic chrome for a timeless effect.

Pro Tip: Invest in good ventilation to prevent mould and protect your materials over the long term.

4. Plan the work

If you're handy, some tasks like painting or installing a vanity can be done yourself. But for plumbing, electrical work, or tile installation, it's best to call in the pros.

A good renovation follows a specific order:

  1. Demolition
  2. Plumbing and electricity
  3. Flooring and wall coverings
  4. Installing showers, bathtubs and fixtures

Find reliable contractors, get several quotes, and remember that sometimes, cheap can be expensive…meaning that skimping on materials and fixtures can lead to expensive fixes!

Renovations are a bit like cooking: they always take longer than expected! Plan for a few weeks of work and a temporary bathroom if yours is not functional.

Pro Tip to minimize delays:

  • Order your materials in advance
  • Keep a buffer in your budget
  • Keep an eye on how the work is progressing
